International Conference: Inclusive Discourses in Performative Arts: Aesthetics, Ethics, Politics, Ecology, Gender
Inclusive trends are currently present in almost every sphere where social transformations take place, including media, urban studies, education, social work, sociocultural design, politics, and art. Theatre and exhibition activities alike are perceived by critics, academics, and the society as a whole in the context of relevant ideas and are formed through discursive strategies. We are primarily concerned with the transformations having taken place in the conceptualization of theatre after the social turn (as Claire Bishop puts it) that introduced the concept of “inclusion” to performative practices. Our conference is meant as an attempt to review contemporary theatrical process formed by inclusive discourses. During these upcoming meetings we welcome discussions of discourses and practices of inclusion in live performance arts. We are interested not only in contemporary art but in art of the past as well – how various strategies, not identified previously as inclusive, become visible due to current optics of the humanities? How does the methodology of theatre and performance studies change because of inclusive discourses? What role does technological discourse play in formation of inclusive discourses?
These (and many other) questions shall be unfolded upon in the following conference panels:
● Inclusion: the history of the concept, contradictions between inclusive discourses, conflicts of interest.
● Inclusive discourses and performative arts theory: institutions, schools and research directions in inclusive art practices.
● Transformation of research methodology: methods of anthropology, sociology and ethnography in performative arts studies. Body as a research instrument. Embodied research, action research, artistic research, practice research, performance research in the context of inclusive discourses. Advocacy and autoethnography as research methods.
● Inclusion in cultural studies: modernity and looking in the past.
● Aesthetics and politics. The role of museums in social activism. “Democratization” of culture and inclusive design of public urban spaces. Ideas and concepts of philosophical essays: “vulnerability”, “philosophy of the Other”, “communicative field”, economics of care.
● Inclusion within the context of creative education.
Our vision of this conference is that of an academic forum allowing to invite researchers from various fields of knowledge, as well as art practitioners, curators, teachers, and other specialists to gather on one platform, exchange their knowledge and experience and create a shared conceptual field.
We welcome both academic scholars and independent researchers, PhD students, and artist researchers who want to know, just like us, what does the discourse of theatre and performative practices look like today, when the concept of “inclusion” has become increasingly ingrained in our everyday lives. The working languages of the conference are Russian and English.
