Transmitting Yvonne Rainer’s Trio A (1966) Masterclass with Sara Wookey, for dancers with experience in contemporary dance

Trio A is a sequence of movements choreographed by Yvonne Rainer lasting about five minutes without music accompaniment. This piece that questions what dance can be and embraces the movement of the everyday, has become an iconic post-modern dance work.
It was first presented in 1966 at the Judson Church in New York under the title of The Mind is a Muscle, Part I by Yvonne Rainer, David Gordon and Steve Paxton who performed it simultaneously but not in unison. Over time, Trio A took on additional forms from solo to large groups. Sara Wookey engages the choreographic composition as well as Yvonne Rainer’s language of the dance in a dialogue with the dancers in the class who will embody it.
